He can do the same here given enough time; an immortal has plenty of it, after all. But Sumarlok is so much bigger than Beauclair by an exponential amount, and the task at times feels impossibly gargantuan. Each turn leads to another alleyway, and there’s always a district or a quaint little square or a shop that might have cropped up like a freshly-grown weed, for how he fails to remember it being there just the other day.
Now, Dettlaff finds himself wandering again. The scent of this place is like oil, like machinery being taken apart and being put together again, and he ducks in and out of places that he has no business being in, drawn forward by simple curiosity. As luck would have it, one garage rewards him greatly for his vampiric nosiness — there, in the center of the wide space and hard flooring, is his new human friend and loyal comrade: Daigo.
The vampire approaches with a growing ease to his gait, eyeing the vehicle the other man appears focused upon.]
Daigo.
[Hi. Whatcha doin.]
Are you always keeping so busy?
no subject
Hey. Were you looking for me?
[ If so that's what phones are for, buddy. Daigo sits back on the little stool he's using, his hands loose between his knees. ]
Well, as it turns out these bikes run on crystal batteries. Something I know nothing about, so I'm out here learning about them.
[ Literally just a larger scale version of taking apart that phone. The irony is not at all lost on Daigo. ]
no subject
I was exploring. This city will take a long time for me to become well and truly familiar with it.
[Running into him had been nothing more than a lucky coincidence! He knows how use his phone... relatively well now. He’s gutted it several times over, put it back together again, and it hasn’t yet failed him. That counts.
And, walking around the bike that Daigo appears to be working on, he wonders at the similarities. He’s seen these vehicles many times in passing, loud and rumbling, wondering at their insides and how they worked — yet crystal batteries is none too different from the inside of their devices, he muses.]
Is this yours?

[ He's from Tokyo, one of the most densely populated cities on Earth. Sumarlok bothers him literally not at all. Urban advice with Daigo. ]
The transit system is usually organized to follow the city's flow, it can be useful to ride around that way to get your bearings.
[ He's been riding around on the bike though, and his smile shows that he's been having a good time doing so. ]
I suppose I could have invested in a house, but this seemed more fun.

At least there's a promise he can keep to Daigo. While it's annoying that they can bring objects here but not return, he's taken advantage of a summoning stone in order to get one of the Crucible sparrows from home. It's a utility vehicle and not meant for racing, but Shaxx isn't and never has been one for sparrow racing. It's still fun enough to ride around, and he thinks Daigo will find it interesting.
He rides the sparrow over to Daigo's garage during a time when Daigo will actually be there, and parks it. Once he's gotten off the vehicle, it phases out and vanishes. (He's relieved that feature made it through the transfer to a different universe intact; he'd been worried, considering Titania had lost all the weapons she'd been carrying for him when they'd arrived.)
Then he heads inside; after making his customary offering to the cat, he calls, "Daigo?"
no subject
That's what he's doing, anyway. That was the point of the garage, wasn't it? It's a business with a schedule that keeps turning regardless. He appears from under the hood of a car, hair loose and unstyled under a bandana. He takes off the gloves he has on and tucks them in a back pocket as he comes out to answer the call of his name and the hiss of the cat. Bells on the door might be a little more pleasant, but the cat serves the same effect.
"Hey," he greets, the usual amount of mild and friendly that he gives everyone. "I wasn't expecting you."
Possibly he should have, but he had been preoccupied with what he was doing.
no subject
"Got something I want to show you," he says, and he's definitely grinning as he does. Treat first, apology and explanation later when they're alone. That seems the best way to do things.
He just has to not be overly distracted by how cute Daigo is right now. He's equal to this task.
no subject
"Sure," he agrees. He was probably going to be a pushover about it no matter what.

He gave me the cup and the darts of his eyes,
and before I drank from his hands,
it was from his eyes that I drank.

I've always lived in the city.
The way things go around here, I thought it might be a good idea to prepare for an emergency.
So please start with the basics.
I'm a very good student.

Shaped to the comfort of the last to go
As if to win them back. Instead, bereft
Of anyone to please, it withers so,
Having no heart to put aside the theft
And turn again to what it started as,
A joyous shot at how things ought to be,
Long fallen wide.

And now he has to show it wasn't fine at all. Opening up put away feelings is an ugly surgery, pestering a wound back open to make it sticky and painful again. It would be much easier not to.
He goes back to the phone much later in the day, back at his apartment complex. On the open cold rooftop where he smokes and watches the noise of his neighborhood below. ]
Welcome back.
