STRENGTHS & FLAWS

gif set YAKUZA 0 (PROLOGUE)In 1988, a spoiled 12-year-old Daigo just wants to hang out with his friend, Kazuma Kiryu. Daigo is the young son of yakuza patriarch, Sohei Dojima. Undisciplined and struggling to make friends due to his father's reputation, Daigo feels like Kiryu is the only person he really trusts. While definitely scolding Daigo for acting like an imperious little brat, Kiryu takes note of the boy's good heart. KIWAMI/KIWAMI 2 (BACKSTORY)In 1995, at the age of 19, Daigo's father is seemingly murdered by Kiryu. This sends shockwaves not only through Daigo but also through the Tojo Clan at large. While Kiryu spends 10 years in jail for the murder, the Tojo Clan goes through dramatic changes and several ugly plots begin to foment.
Daigo isn't around to see the fireworks up close. After working himself into a frenzy over his betrayed trust, he impulsively gets baited into a fight with his rival, Ryuji Goda. The fight is overtly a trap and the police are waiting in Kansai to arrest him. Daigo spends 5 years in jail, and on his release feels like an idiot. Rather than return to the clan, he bums around town drinking like a fish and getting into fights. His natural charisma is a draw to a lot of punks who are otherwise too undisciplined to swear up with the yakuza. He ends up the leader of one of the largest street gangs in Tokyo.
In 2006, when Kiryu comes to ask him to become the chairman of the Tojo Clan and to act as figurehead for the crumbling institution, Daigo isn't interested. He tells Kiryu that he doesn't look up to him anymore and that he doesn't believe in the Tojo Clan. Kiryu beats him up until he agrees to at least consider it.
Consideration becomes agreement when Ryuji Goda declares war on the struggling Tojo Clan. Daigo gives a rousing speech to his men about the ideals they believe in. In those moments the whole clan in behind him. He is only 30 years old. YAKUZA (MAIN SERIES)Now the Sixth Chairman of the Tojo Clan, Daigo struggles to maintain his position and keep his clan on course. The Clan is a shell of its former self, lacking the strong subsidiary leadership that it once had and struggling financially. The clan appears as an easy target to its rivals, and Daigo is hounded for his inexperience and young age by his own men. Though many families still resent Kiryu for the perceived murders of former strong patriarchs, other families see him as the preferred leader to Daigo. Although putting on a calm and collected façade, Daigo is uncertain about his suitability for the position as well.
YAKUZA 3In 2009, Daigo is shot by the CIA when he stands in the way of a land deal that would displace the Okinawan orphanage Kiryu now operates. While he is in a coma in the hospital, his chain of command is gutted by both their own in-fighting and their conflict with the CIA. When Daigo returns to the chair, only his advisor, Majima, is still at his side.
YAKUZA 4In 2010, Daigo is drawn in by the corrupt Deputy Commissioner of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police: Seishiro Munakata. The Tojo Clan isn't making enough money to operate, and Daigo is desperate for a solution to their dire finances. Munkata has promised him the money the clan needs in exchange for his cooperation in his ever-increasing stranglehold on Tokyo. However, circumstances draw Kiryu into this web of chaos and he puts a stop to Munkata's schemes. He personally defeats Daigo on his way to Munkata.
YAKUZA 5In 2012, Daigo travels to Fukuoka where he knows Kiryu is living on the down low as a taxi driver. As they circle the city, Daigo explains that the terminal illness of the Omi Alliance's chairman is causing a succession war to flare up. After Kiryu boots him from the taxi, declining to help with this problem, Daigo disappears in order to lose the two bodyguards he knows are plotting to assassinate him.
Daigo travels secretly to Nagoya where he makes contact with his former high school classmate, Tatsuo Shinada. To help his old friend out and to get some intel, Daigo-in-disguise offers him ¥20,000,000 to investigate a local Nagoya crime family.
The threads of their investigation and the investigations of Majima, Kiryu, Akiyama, Saejima, Katsuya, and Watase all lead them back to the ailing Omi Alliance chairman: Tsubasa Kurosawa. Dying of lung cancer, Kurosawa has decided to entirely decimate and consolidate both the Omi and the Tojo as a gift to his illegitimate son, Masato Aizawa.
Daigo almost kills Kurosawa himself, but is shot by the Omi chairman's accomplice at the last moment. Daigo later returns the favor by killing the last of Kurosawa's men. He leaves the old bastard alive to die of his cancer once his plans have been foiled.
YAKUZA 6In 2015, the Little Asia district of Kamurocho is burned down. The Tojo Clan is framed for this as an act of arson to drive out rival businesses. As the clan chairman, Daigo is jailed for the crime. Majima and Saejima join him soon after.
They are only released when Kiryu is able to provide the true culprits and some political leverage. However, they are released to the news of Kiryu's death. Kiryu's last will is addressed to Daigo, wherein he finally shares his feelings of pride for all that Daigo has accomplished and asks him not to take revenge for his death.
YAKUZA 7In 2017, the upstart new governor of Tokyo, Ryo Aoki, pushes forward new anti-yakuza laws. Behind the scenes, he also puts pressure on Tojo Clan officers to betray the clan. The first of his targets, his own father Masumi Arakawa, brings word of this to Daigo. Rather than wait for Aoki to try again with another family, Daigo instead gives Masumi the go ahead to leak the intel. With the Tojo Clan ostensibly conquered, Daigo goes into hiding with Majima and Saejima with the help of Nick Ogata.
They remain in hiding until 2019, only resurfacing when the Omi Alliance Captain, Masaru Watase, is released from his own prison sentence. Daigo and Watase have convened to dissolve both the Omi Alliance and the Tojo Clan before an assembled witness of shocked Omi officers. The angry officers attempt to kill both leaders, but a retinue of Tojo Clan loyalists guard the stage.
With his clan gone, Daigo intends to reincorporate on the 'correct' side of the law as a private security company. He will still be hiring back as many of his old men as he can support.
IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS
FAMILY💀 SOHEI DOJIMA Daigo's father. Sohei Dojima was an extremely powerful and well-respected Tojo Clan patriarch throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Sohei was a cruel and calculating yakuza with little time for his son. He was murdered in 1995 when he kidnapped and attempted to rape Yumi Sawamura, the childhood friend of Kiryu and Nishikiyama. His attitude towards women was well-known prior to this point, this incident came as a surprise to no one. However, without his strong influence the Tojo Clan began to fracture and slide into decline.
YAYOI DOJIMA Daigo's mother. Yayoi is a steadfast and traditional woman, and one who knows exactly the kind of world she married in to. She is vicious and as strong as steel. After the murder of chairman Yukio Terada, she steps in as acting chairman of the Tojo Clan and has no qualms about silencing the squabbling of its officers by brandishing a sword. She has an icy exterior, but a passionate heart that is dedicated to the Tojo Clan and to her son. Hints of her can be seen in the persona Daigo takes on as chairman: calm, collected, and in control.
MENTORS💀 OSAMU KASHIWAGI Before the death of his father, Daigo was a member of the Kazama Family of which Kashiwagi was captain. As Daigo's position in the clan changed, Kashiwagi was always there at his side. He advanced to clan captain, where he was a staunch friend and supporter to Daigo. Kashiwagi is a devoted and caring captain with a strong moral center. Daigo's leadership also takes after him significantly in this regard. Kashiwagi was gunned down during a conflict with the CIA in 2009, this was a significant loss to the Tojo Clan's old guard.
💀 KAZUMA KIRYU (FOURTH CHAIRMAN) As a young member of the Dojima family, Kiryu used to hang out with and play with Daigo when he was a child. Daigo had few friends because of his yakuza father. He looked up to Kiryu, and Kiryu in turn helped to curb Daigo's increasingly spoiled attitude and instructed him on how to be a better person. In 1995, Kiryu took the fall for Sohei Dojima's murder. The idea that his friend and mentor had murdered his father gutted Daigo. He lost all faith in Kiryu and in the Tojo Clan. It was Kiryu who came to find him after he had left the clan and is the one who tapped Daigo as chairman. When Daigo finally accepted this responsibility, Kiryu left the clan entirely in his hands and departed for Okinawa; leaving Daigo without his support or guidance. Trying to live up to what Kiryu sees in him has been an ongoing source of struggle for Daigo. It was only after Kiryu's death in 2016 that Daigo received a final written letter from Kiryu that truly expressed the man's love and pride for a young man he viewed as his son. This went a long way in giving Daigo more confidence in himself.
💀 AKIRA NISHIKIYAMA Kiryu's best friend, Nishiki would often also hang out with Daigo and play with him when he was young. After Kiryu went to jail for the murder that Nishikiyama committed, his personality began to change. He became bitter and cruel, and eventually made a play for the Tojo Clan chairmanship that gutted much of the clan's chain of command. The havoc he wreaked left the clan a shadow of its former glory. This lead Daigo to truly believe the clan wasn't even worth fighting for any longer.
GORO MAJIMA The Mad Dog of Shimano. Majima is infamous for his unhinged personality and viciousness. He also happens to lead the largest family in the Tojo Clan and is Daigo's closest advisor. He was initially asked to take that position by Kiryu, but has since developed a strong relationship with Daigo for himself. Majima is an inevitable hurdle that has to be cleared in any plot to take down the Sixth Chairman, and the both of them have suffered through an immense amount of shit together. Despite his persona as an unhinged madman, Majima is smarter than he seems and Daigo has learned a lot from him; especially in regards to intel gathering and scheming. Majima is also much more caring than appearances belie, he and Daigo both care earnestly about their men and want to do what's best for them. Majima has had a surprising amount of influence on who Daigo is today.
PEERS💀 YOSHITAKA MINE Formerly one of Daigo's ranking officers, Mine joined the yakuza world after growing disenchanted with a hollow life in finance. He was looking for some kind of meaning in his life, and was surprised to find Daigo. He says that Daigo is the first person to ever believe in him unconditionally and developed intense feelings for the chairman. In 2009 when Daigo is shot and left in a coma, Mine spirals out of control from grief only to be talked down by Kiryu. This is short-lived. To resolve a lingering threat to Daigo's life, Mine drags a seemingly unstoppable enemy off the roof of the Touto University Hospita with him. Daigo was conscious enough to witness this and is still filled with a great deal of grief over this loss to this day. Mine's ghost can still be found around the base of the tower.
💀 RYUJI GODA Son of the Omi Alliance chairman, Daigo saw Ryuji as his rival... while the only rival Ryuji was interested in was Kiryu. It was Ryuji who lured Daigo out to Kansai in the year 2000, only get him arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. In all subsequent encounters, Daigo never once bests Ryuji in a fight. In 2006, it's Ryuji and his yakuza family that declare war on Kamurocho, necessitating the need for Daigo step up as Tojo Clan chairman to rally the men against the attack. Ryuji dies from multiple gunshot wounds while embroiled in a plot that threatens both the Omi and the Tojo.
TATSUO SHINADA Daigo's high school friend. He befriended Tatsuo without ever letting on that he was a yakuza's son, making their friendship one based upon its own merits. Wanting to protect Tatsuo's dreams of making it to a prestigious baseball competition, Daigo beat down a rival team that was trying to use threats and bribes to push West Kamuro High out of the way. This got Daigo expelled, but it was worth it. He later reconnects with Tatsuo in 2012 while investigating a yakuza plot revolving around baseball fixing. His biggest desire is to make sure that Tatsuo's life is set right after the havoc the yakuza have wreaked on it.
NICK OGATA A rich (and very shady) businessman from Kamurocho. He and Daigo met in a bar at some point and developed a relationship. When increasingly stringent anti-yakuza laws drove Daigo into hiding around 2017, Daigo reached out to Nick for a place to stay. For two years, he pretty much just hangs out in hiding with Nick, Majima, and Saejima. Wonder what they got up to.
